OFTEN IGNORED FACTS ABOUT DIY BEAUTY

When it comes to living a healthy and holistic lifestyle, what we put on our face is just as important as what we put on our body. So, making and using our own beauty products can be both fun and therapeutic. I follow a simple skin care routine and I feel it’s enough to make me feel good and confident in my skin. Along with that, ‘a self care day’ enhances the very beauty that each individual carries within them. Thus, do not rush beauty but let it come through your mind, body and spirit. Here I share some of my thoughts on diy beauty.

WHAT ARE DIY BEAUTY PRODUCTS?
DIY beauty is a great way to create beauty products which suits your skin type, is cost effective, produces less waste and is easy to make. But, that doesn’t mean that you will mash everything and put in on your face. You have to know which ingredients you are putting on the face and their role in skincare.
In ancient Ayurveda, beauty came directly from the kitchen’s fresh ingredients and these ingredients are still well known in the beauty department today. Of course, time has changed. There is pollution, climate change, water change, food has pesticides and there are chemicals in every product we use. These issues influence our skin health a lot. Both topical application and ingestion of nutrients is required for the full potential of vitamins or nutrients to manifest.

WHY MAKE YOUR OWN BEAUTY PRODUCTS?
It is important to pay close attention to the ingredients in our skin care products like to what we eat. To eliminate a lot of toxic chemicals and preservatives and fragrances that are harmful for our body, it is important to choose ingredients that are safe. And making your own beauty products helps you choose different valuable ingredients.
But, you have to remember that every skin type is different so it will react differently on the same ingredients. Now, here lies the beauty of diy products as you can customise it according to your skin concerns. You can avoid ingredients you are allergic to and include ingredients suitable to your skin. Just because an ingredient works for me doesn’t mean it will work for you. Therefore, you must try it first. Now, do not be scared about trying because many of the ingredients won’t react to damage skin in a single use considering you keep in mind the proportion of what you are using.  For example, turmeric, the miracle root is known to treat many ailments and skin conditions. But, some people might be allergic to turmeric. After one use you might notice redness and other issues which you will know after single use. But, you don’t have to worry about it because it won’t be causing drastic complications on skin health. The allergic reactions will just show about your skins incompatibility but you won’t have to worry much.
Thus, many ingredients known in the diy space aren’t recommended for the harm it may cause. All natural ingredients or naturally occurring ingredients are not safe for ingestion or topical application. Some are highly toxic whereas others are highly beneficial. Now, we don’t have to go too vast on natural ingredients as some simple ingredients found in our kitchen are beneficial to treat various ailments of both skin and health.

TIPS TO KNOW IF AN INGREDIENT WILL SUIT YOU

  • Try only simple ingredients first which are easy to access.
  • Make small batch of products (face mask, hair mask, mists) so that products don’t go waste (minimal waste and use is important).
  • Do a patch test so that you do not have to suffer with allergies. If irritation or redness occurs, abort mission!
  • Don’t be too scared of microtears unless using some really rough ingredients like normal sugar on the face. Ingredients such as oatmeal are very gentle and turn creamy on contact with water.

TIPS ON HOW TO MAKE YOUR OWN DIY PRODUCTS
  • Make products in a hygienic environment after properly washing your hands.
  • Use glass/ceramic/wooden bowls to avoid any reactions of products (also you can use plastic bowls).
  • Make small batch to avoid waste.
  • Collect adequate information about ingredients you are going to use.
  • Dry ingredients/Anhydrous products (without water or moisture) can be stored upto 6 months.
  • Products containing water should be made for one time use or 3-7 days at the max when refrigerated (toners and mists).
  • Usability of DIY oil blend will depend on the expiry date of each oil used or until oil turns rancid.
  • Write down labels with dates so that you know when the product is suspected to expire.
  • There is no requirement of preservative if you are making small batches or 1 time use. Broad spectrum preservatives should be use when you are making products which contain water. Otherwise dry products don’t need preservatives, as already mentioned. Therefore, you do not have to worry about putting bacteria onto your face because you won’t.

NATURAL SKINCARE
  • Always experiment in small batch so as not to waste ingredients.
  • Know about what an ingredient does and how it works so that you can substitute something that works similarly. Understanding the basic action of ingredients helps greater ability to personalise according to the skin needs. You can control what ingredients you are using.
  • Go for zero waste beauty which is both sustainable and good for your health.
  • Do not be overwhelmed by the vast range of information available on the internet. Our aim is to take beauty slowly and take care of our skin, mind and body holistically. Simple minimal ingredients available at our disposal are oftentimes more than enough.
  • Write down the exact amount and record it in a separate notebook.

NOTE:
You might have noticed how I have stressed on making small batch of skin and hair care products. It is because our aim should be zero waste and not unnecessary wastage of products. Slow beauty is my basic aim which includes using simple ingredients along with taking care of your physical, mental and spiritual health.

GOOD HABITS FOR HEALTHY SKIN

Good skin is not achieved by only applying products on your skin but following these healthy habits. Not just for the skin but these will ensure a healthy mind, body and spirit...all of these together will make you a beautiful inside and outside.

These were the basic rules you need to know while making your own DIY products.
