HAIR SPA AT HOME : EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW

Taking care of your hair is as essential as taking care of your skin and just like our skin, our hair too are a good indicator of our health. With all the dirt, pollution and unhealthy lifestyle we deal or live with, different hair issues such as hair loss, flaky scalp and dandruff are too common these days. Therefore, in order to keep your tresses healthy, it’s imperative to indulge in a hair spa at least twice a month along with a balanced diet, lots of water intake and enough sleep. During these tough times and amidst all the chaos, I am sure not everyone will be willing to go have some spa session. So, I bring to you a customisable hair spa you can have in the comforts of your home. No need of expensive treatments or equipments. Remember that shiny great hair is achievable with proper care, diet and lifestyle. So, without any delay let’s hop onto the steps.

The whole spa procedure will take quite a lot of time so, either take a day off and invest the time only with yourself or you can incorporate it with your daily chores. I assure you, it won’t be messy. But, in case you want to really enjoy the spa session, then relax and treat yourself with reading your favourite book, watching your favourite tv show/movie, painting, cooking...do anything that relaxes you. Also, you might want to do this on a bright day as you might catch cold as the procedure is a bit extensive.

There are mainly 6 steps to doing hair spa.

1. Oil treatment/ Scalp massage

2. Steaming

3. Hair wash

4. Hair mask

5. Hair wash

6. Hair rinse

STEP 1: OIL TREATMENT

Oiling your hair is an important step when it comes to taking care of your hair health. Stimulating the scalp is crucial and it leads to an improved scalp health and provides it with enough oxygen and blood. I have a blend of some potent oils which I use to oil treat my hair. Massage your scalp with your favourite oil and let it settle for 15 minutes. Then, move on to the next step.

HAIR GROWTH OIL BLEND

  • 4 tsp Castor oil

           1 tsp Sweet Almond oil

3 tsp Amla and tulsi infused oil

           1 tsp Neem oil

          10-12 drops Rosemary essential oil

           10-12 Lemon essential oil

This blend can do wonders if you have an itchy scalp or dandruff. Weekly scalp massage with this blend helps in doing away with the itchiness and promotes hair growth.

Use any good quality cold pressed oil for maximum benefits.

Cold pressed coconut oil+ a few drops of essential oil and so on.

While choosing a hair oil AVOID the following ingredients:

  • Mineral oil
  • Fragrance

STEP 2: STEAMING

This step ensures the maximum absorption of oil by the scalp. During the previous step, the strands do not fully absorb the oil, i.e., the oil stays only on the outside but, the heat opens the cuticles and helps in the maximum absorption of nutrients.

Take a small towel, dip it in warm water and wrap your hair for 20- 30 minutes.

STEP 3: WASHING

After you are done with steaming, wash your hair with a mild shampoo. Do not apply conditioner at this step.

STEP 4: HAIR MASK

Hair mask is vital to bring back nutrition and hydration back to your hair. You can use any mask you prefer or can make one like I do. Following are a few blends:

  • Aloe vera( as required)

          1 tsp Honey

          1 tsp Coconut oil

  • 1 Banana

            1 tsp Honey

  •  Curd( as required)

            2 tsp Amla powder

            2 tsp Hibiscus powder

STEP 5: Keep the hair mask for 1 to 1 ½ hours. Wash it off with shampoo and conditioner as usual.

STEP 6: HAIR RINSE (optional)

You may also rinse your hair with any herbal or acv rinse. It’s optional though. Following is a blend I commonly use:

APPLE CIDER VINEGAR RINSE

  • 1 tbsp Apple cider vinegar
  • 200 ml of water

Rinse your hair with it after washing your hair, let it stand for 1-2 minutes. And— voila! You are done. You don’t have to rinse it off again with water.

That’s about it. You have successfully enjoyed a hair spa at home. These basic steps are going to make your hair shiny and healthy. The whole routine can be followed for 2 or 3 times a month. Also, any one of the steps can be done individually once as week if the whole process feels exhaustive or do not fit into your schedule. While doing it, let yourself slow down and enjoy the time. Perhaps light some candles, prepare a cosy space, and grab a cup of coffee/tea/hot chocolate, binge your favourite Netflix show, or read your favourite magazine. Let this time be only yours and relax and take time to feel how the whole spa is going to make your hair healthy. Take deep breaths and witness the incredible results you get.

NOTE:

  • For all those who have split ends, you will need to cut your ends because no remedy or procedure can join your already split ends.
  • While oiling/scalp massaging, you might lose some hair but, don’t be scared as it is normal. Just do not massage too hard. Only use your finger tips to avoid damaging your scalp.
  • The oil blend (mentioned in Step 1) is perfect for itchy scalp and dandruff.
